Dietary Supplements: Buyer Beware
Statements quoted from the FDA website:
“Generally, manufacturers do not need to register their products with FDA nor get FDA approval before producing or selling dietary supplements.”
“…a firm does not have to provide the FDA with the evidence it relies on to substantiate safety or effectiveness before or after it markets its products.”
“Also, manufacturers do not need to register themselves nor their dietary supplement products with FDA before producing or selling them. Currently, there are no FDA regulations that are specific to dietary supplements that establish a minimum standard of practice for manufacturing dietary supplements.”
Due to the FDA stance on dietary supplements, we, as consumers, should approach these products with good judgment and a bit of skepticism. Consumers face the challenge of discovering whether a product is safe, effective, and/or contains the ingredients the label claims to have, all on their own. Obviously this is an impossible task to perform while at a store with no knowledge of the company philosophy, practices, intention, data, etc.
However, on the other hand, if the FDA were to regulate dietary supplements more closely, we would see a skyrocketing effect on prices as seen with the drug industry. Therefore, professionals who understand the benefits of using quality dietary supplements in a responsible manner prefer to have loose FDA regulations, so everyone can access these valuable assets to health.
What is a consumer to do? First of all, understand there are many quality companies in the market who exist to benefit their customers versus simply cashing in on a booming market. Our doctors at Boots Chiropractic & Wellness Center, S.C. spend a considerable amount of time sorting through the many company product lines to ensure that our patients are only taking safe, proven, effective supplements that contain the label claims. We enjoy helping people sort through this daunting task and we feel all consumers should use professional advice when considering using dietary supplements. We carry several quality product lines that we are very proud of, however we understand there are others we don’t carry that are quality products also. We simply do not have space for every quality product on the market.
Our website also serves as a general guideline to help you understand dietary supplements a little more. After reading the many pages we have designed for you, we think you should understand why product A from a large chain store costs $10.00 while quality product B costs $ 20.00. Also, you should understand why cost comparison is not always a fair comparison because product A may actually harm your health.
Please continue to read the next several pages as primers in your knowledge of dietary supplements.
